Educational buildings are generally designed with multiple escape routes and adequate compartmentation.

However new buildings are being constructed using modern building materials which enable designers create larger, more open lighter spaces. By introducing these new layouts to buildings, non-traditional forms of compartmentation are required. These can include fixed or automatic smoke and/or fire screens and virtual compartments using pressurisation or de-pressurisation.
